Description: The flag of India was officially adopted
on July 22, 1947. The orange (saffron) color
represents sacrifice and courage of the people, the green is for
faith, fertility and chivalry, the white for peace and truth and
the blue indicates the sky and ocean. The navy blue wheel in the
center of the flag is called Ashoka's Dharma Chakra, with 24 spokes
(after Ashoka, the Great). Each spoke depicts one hour of the
day and intends to show that there is life in movement and death
in stagnation. Musical genres like filmi and bhangra have become
popular throughout the United Kingdom, South and East Asia, and
around the world. Other highly popular forms are ghazal, qawwali,
thumri, dhrupad, dadra, bhajan, kirtan, shabad, and gurbani. The
music of India including Carnatic and Hindustani music, has a
history spanning millennia and developed over several eras. Some
instruments used in these genres are the harmonium, tabla, khamak,
ektara, dotara and dholak.
