Description: The current flag of Chile was officially
adopted on October 18, 1817. The blue represents the color of
the high-mountain skies, white is symbolic of the snow in the
Andes Mountains, and red symbolizes the blood shed during the
long fight for freedom. The national dance is the cueca. Another
form of traditional Chilean song, though not a dance, is the tonada.
In the mid-1960s musical forms like La Nueva Canción became
popular for it’s lyrics of protest, poverty and social empowerment.
Some of the instruments used feature the Chilean guitarrón,
guitar, quena,
zampoña, charango or cajón.
